CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS FOR NEW PATIENTS

When you are a patient in our office, your comfort level is of utmost importance. Adjustments are more effective if you understand how they work and have a reasonable expectation of what will happen. There are many different types of chiropractic adjustments, ranging from a hand held instrument that gently taps your joints to the traditional being put into a certain position, feeling a gentle release and hearing a "cracking" sound.

The types of adjusting techniques used in our office are Activator, Diversified, Flexion Distraction and Thompson Techniques.

  • Activator: The Activator Technique is known for being very gentle. The Chiropractor uses a handheld adjustment device to deliver a specific force into the joint. Patients are typically less sore after this chiropractic adjustment technique. It helps treat patients with osteoporosis and systemic inflammation in a safe and effective way.
  • Diversified: The Diversified Technique is the traditional cracking technique that Chiropractors are known for. This chiropractic adjustment involves using a low force, high speed adjustment over restricted joints. This will quickly help restore range of motion, decrease muscle spasm and pain.
  • Flexion Distraction: The Flexion Distraction Technique involves using a table that helps put traction on the spine to decrease pressure on the nerves, discs, joints, ligaments, and muscles. This chiropractic adjustment technique is used mostly for patients who complain about back and leg pain.
  • Thompson Techniques: The Thompson Technique involves using a drop table that makes a loud noise when the chiropractor adjusts the spine to help realign the joints and pelvis. It is a very effective chiropractic adjustment technique for patients with severe or acute back pain.

  • Additionally, we use therapies such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation and intersegmental traction.

  • Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses a special applicator and gel that transmits sound waves deep into the body to decrease inflammation.
  • Electrical Stimulation: Electrical Stimulation uses an gentle electric current that is sent through pads placed on the painful area that decreases muscle cramping and spasm.
  • Intersegmental Traction: Intersegmental Traction is a machine that gently separates the vertabree one at a time to decrease pressure on the joints and nerves.
  • Graston Technique: Graston Technique is a specilized technique that uses instruments to break up myofascial adhesions that cause chronic painful conditions such as: Tennis Elbow, Plantar Fascitis to name a few. Dr. Carter has been certified in Graston Technique since 2004.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Therapeutic Exercises are very important to maintaining the effects of the chiropractic adjustment. Dr. Carter will review stretching and strenghtening exercises to keep your muscles strong and balanced.
  • You may also be advised to undergo other holistic treatments, including massage therapy and exercises.

Before we do any sort of adjustment or treatment, we will perform a thorough exam to diagnose your condition. This exam will include questions about your past medical history and check your range of motion, posture, alignment and muscle tension.
